\nI came home and found no lion in my living room.
\nChecked the fishtank, looked under the sofa. Lion? Lion?
\nThe neighbors rise the music in their battered car to shut me out,
\nAnd I went to my kitchen in Jersey City, watched by the squirrel on the sill.
\nI think he warned me.<\/p>\n

Sent out a message to the air
\nThere will be no answer, the air is dried up, whithered.
\n‘There is no lion’, the message screamed, ‘I looked everywhere’.
\nBut then an answer came, surprising on the top of my head.
\n‘It’s raining’, it said.<\/p>\n

Thought of the West, talking with coffee in Starbucks on Shattuck,
\nHow I would not mention the lack of lion,
\nHow she would smell it in my frightened breath,
\nAnd the foam on the cup would curl in silence,
\nNo squirrels here, they wait for the nuts in their own trees.<\/p>\n

Rode Brompton Sip to Westside avoiding potholes biting lips,
\nThe rolling fool, the hanged man,
\nMy wheel sinks teeth, catches in asphalt darkness,
\nBike folds, tips, I sail with outstretched arms and down,
\nAnd down, to Hackensack and ride its murky waters out Atlantic,
\nLost to life, at sea.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t happen. Reaching bottom, run over by the poor
\nIn their poor cars, turning into turn, machine against the lost,
\nPulling my brakes to watch him go,
\nHe too taking no lion on his poor journey to nothing.<\/p>\n

A sign bends into path, tipping weary head, a message in the dark,
\nGreyed promises of impact, swerving to the graves behind a fence.
\nThen there I see him not, in fading light and dripping sky,
\nStalking ghosts, a ghost himself, the beast,
\nHe rises on his hinds and melting into fire,
\nA whisping cloud, is gone.<\/p>\n

I came home, and found strange fish in my living room,
\nSitting on the sofa,
\nAnd a bowl of spaghetti on a plate on a tray on a table,
\nAnd a squirrel on the sill, pointing to his tree with beady eyes,
\nExpecting me.
